Bio-materials derived from coffee grounds and coffee waste.

Description

The Dutch coffee consumption accounts for approximately 12 billion cups of coffee per year, which produces approximately 100 million kilos of coffee grounds. Also the roasting process of coffee beans creates waste, namely the 'silverskin' (a thin layer around the coffee bean that gets loose during this process). Both the coffee grounds and the silverskin often end up in the waste bin. For Coffee Based, coffee grounds and silverskin are not waste, but a valuable raw material that has lost its way. To give it a new purpose, Coffee Based has developed various bio-based coffee granules with different properties and uses them to make products such as coffee cups, notebooks, wall panels and plant pots. The coffee grounds required for the production of these compounds are collected locally in the Netherlands through our Coffee Recycle Service. If companies use this service, their coffee grounds are collected separately and recycled into new products, some of which are also returned to these companies. By collecting and recycling coffee waste, Coffee Based contributes to reducing waste and the use of new raw materials. With our (reusable) products that are partly made from waste, we offer a replacement for (disposable) products made from petroleum or other virgin materials. For every kilogram of coffee grounds used to make a new product, one kilogram less 'virgin' material is needed.
