Description
New Grain™ provides an innovative solution to tackle the leather industry's detrimental impact on both people and planet by creating a leather alternative from waste brewery grain that is free from animals, plastic, and toxic chemicals. Currently, most leather alternatives are made from, or are coated with, plastic, bringing all of the issues related to petrochemical pollution, including microplastics.
Arda's novel material, New Grain™, is made by extracting proteins from waste brewers' grain, adding binders and using green chemistry to turn the solution into a leather-like material. One of the distinct advantages of New Grain™ is its adaptability throughout production stages. This adaptability allows for customisation, from the choice of grain feedstock to tailoring performance attributes, colours, thicknesses, and finishes. The versatility bears resemblance to plastic-based leathers but distinguishes itself by maintaining the luxurious, soft handfeel of conventional leather.
Conventional leather production is a lengthy process that relies on intensive agriculture to provide animal feed, animal agriculture, toxic tanning and finishing. New Grain™, in comparison, takes less than two weeks from protein extraction to material formation without reliance on extensive supply chains. The time and raw materials saved in producing New Grain™ means the material can be competitively priced.
By switching to waste plant-protein feedstocks and omitting animal agriculture and petrochemical-derived ingredients, New Grain™ drastically lowers carbon footprints (77-99% less than conventional leather). Arda’s emphasis on creating local supply chains further reduces emissions, offering a scalable blueprint for global adoption.
